RUSSIA - Journalists Media Being Blocked, But Not State Media

"Journalists in trouble, as denial-of-service attacks hit Russian non-state media" Democracy Digest 5/10/2012

Excerpt

“The websites of several leading non-state media in Russia have been shut down by denial-of-service (DOS) attacks as Moscow prepares for an opposition demonstration against Vladimir Putin’s return to the presidency,” RFE-RL reports.

The organizers of the high profile Eurovision song contest are showing “willful blindness” toward violations of media freedoms in Azerbaijan, Journalists in Trouble reports. U.S. Congressman Howard Berman has joined local and international rights groups in protesting against intimidation of and violence toward journalists.

Azerbaijani democracy advocates like Rasul Jafarov are using the contest to highlight the authoritarian’s regime’s rights abuses.

Iran’s Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has become the latest victim of Iran’s Internet censorship regime:

Khamenei’s “fatwa” on the illegality of using antifiltering tools in Iran was itself blocked in the country, some 30 hours after it was published on Iranian websites. The ruling was seemingly filtered because it contained the word “antifiltering,” which triggered the country’s censorship system to automatically block it.
