MILITARY - Iraq Withdrawal 2012?

"McDonough: U.S. Military Brass 'Absolutely' OK With Iraq Withdrawal by 2012" PBS Newshour 10/21/2011

Excerpt

JUDY WOODRUFF (Newshour): The Iraq war is almost over.

That announcement came from the commander in chief almost nine years after the U.S. invasion. During the 2008 campaign, President Obama pledged to end the conflict. Up until this week, American and Iraqi officials were negotiating ways for some troops to remain after the Dec. 31 deadline. But the two countries failed to reach agreement on legal immunity for U.S. forces who stayed on to train Iraqis.

President Obama spoke to reporters after a private video conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

COMMENTS: It is about time, after 9yrs (our longest war).

But having said that, the situation in Iraq is not ideal. Not what we would like, but note that we did try to negotiate to stay to complete training.

As can be expected, the Tea Party (once the Republican Party) is using this for political gain in their anything-Obama-is-bad campagain.

Needless to say, the families of our troops can now breath much easier. Their loveones will soon be out of harms way, for the present, and some will come home.

To our troops, thanks and enjoy a well deserved rest.
