SUMMARY: Louisiana Public Broadcasting reports on the "heart-wrenching" effects of Tropical Storm Isaac. Charlie Whinham reports in Baton Rouge, La., from a field hospital where hundreds of evacuees with special needs are being treated. Shauna Sanford goes to LaPlace where flood damage was worse after Isaac than Hurricane Katrina.
COMMENT: I may have said this before, but EVERYONE who lives near, or on, a flood prone area needs to consider that flooding WILL happen and build homes accordingly.
They should take a page from how other countries (like the Philippines) build homes in flood prone areas:
- Build 2-story (or more) homes, with a deck
- The bottom story is a garage, with ONLY two sides, in re-enforced concrete block (the open structure allows flood waters to flow through without bringing down the home)
- The upper stories are for living and storage of items you do not want damaged (like having a attic for your storage)
- You could consider having a dumbwaiter (elevator) for transporting goods from the car upstairs
The bottom line is to have a home that DOES NOT have to be rebuilt when a flood happens. In this suggestion only your car and maybe shop equipment would have to be replaced.
