Economics correspondent Paul Solman sits down with economist Surjit Bhalla, and sociologist Ravinder Kaur, to discuss Bhalla’s book, “The New Wealth of Nations,” as well as the backlash to increasing equality.
Paul Solman (NewsHour): And the cost? What’s the cost?
Surjit Bhalla, author:The cost is that people in the West are going to lose out relative to the people in the East, the East meaning the rest of the world, the West meaning the advanced countries.
What happens, when the world is filled with everybody graduating from high school, then the Western people will lose their advantage over the rest of the world.
SUMMARY: The first all-female college in Rwanda is making strides in empowering women from all backgrounds to become the nation’s next business leaders, part of an effort to leave behind an image of a violent country, wracked by genocide. At the Akilah Institute, students prepare for well-paying jobs and financial independence and learn gender equality. Special correspondent Fred de Sam Lazaro reports.
Fred de Sam Lazaro (NewsHour): But the statistic that makes this country unique in the world reflects the role of women in all of this. Half of this country’s Supreme Court justices are female, and so are two-thirds of its members of parliament.
I am Retired U.S. Navy (22yrs) and a Vietnam Veteran. After my Navy retirement I was in the computer related industry, now retired. In 2000 I was a registered Republican and voted for George W. Bush. Six months of having Bush in the Whitehouse forced me to re-evaluate my political stance. I had always thought of myself as a Moderate Republican, but was a Republican by "default" NOT because of close examination of the GOP. Due to what has happened in America since 2000, I now consider myself a progressive, and registered as a Non-Affiliated voter.
