AMERICA - Economic Inequality, Part-4

"Do Social Safety Net Programs Shrink Gap in U.S. Economic Inequality?" (Series Part-4) PBS Newshour 9/21/2011

(Series Part-1, Part-2, Part-3, Part-5, Part-6)

Excerpt

JEFFREY BROWN (Newshour): And we return now to our continuing series on inequality.

NewsHour economics correspondent Paul Solman has been examining that subject, including studies showing an alarming rise in the so-called wealth gap. But tonight's interview takes issue with that view.

It's part of Paul's reporting on Making Sense of financial news.

ROBERT LERMAN, Professor of Economics, American University: It would be nice if there was more equality, but let's not overdo it.

PAUL SOLMAN (Newshour): Bob Lerman is professor of economics at American University, a fellow at the Urban Institute, and an old college friend a year ahead of me at Brandeis University in the '60s.

My original article on subject mentioned in video is Series Part-1

I am Retired U.S. Navy (22yrs) and a Vietnam Veteran.   After my Navy retirement I was in the computer related industry, now retired.  In 2000 I was a registered Republican and voted for George W. Bush.  Six months of having Bush in the Whitehouse forced me to re-evaluate my political stance.  I had always thought of myself as a Moderate Republican, but was a Republican by "default" NOT because of close examination of the GOP.  Due to what has happened in America since 2000, I now consider myself a progressive, and registered as a Non-Affiliated voter.
